The biggest question I feel is not whether Glucosamine works in easing joint discomfort, increasing flexibility and possibly repairing cartilage; the real question is why such a discrepancy in studies?
Glucosamine for the most part come from crustacean shellfish such as crabs, crayfish, lobster and shrimp. What is missing in nearly all of the studies is the actual method that the Glucosamine was prepared. Here are the main methods:
Much of the Glucosamine supplied for animal use is done through inexpensive but poorly effective methods like crushing and cutting. Crushing employs hammer-like tools to break the solid into smaller particles by means of impact. Cutting uses sharp blades to cut the rough solid pieces into smaller ones. This produce leaves the particles in such large pieces that the ability for an animal to break them down to a usable amino sugar are nearly impossible. Traditional micronization techniques are based on friction to reduce particle size. These methods include milling and grinding. A typical industrial mill is made of a cylindrical metallic drum that usually contains steel spheres. As the drum rotates the spheres inside collide with the particles of the solid, thus crushing them towards smaller diameters. In the case of grinding, the solid particles are formed when the grinding units of the device rub against each other while particles of the solid are trapped in between. This process is better than crushing or cutting , but still leaves the particles larger than. The size of these particles may look similar to finally ground sugar.
