That's why we've spent decades at dogIDs thinking about something that sounds incredibly simple:
What's the most practical way to make sure a dog can always be identified?
Over the years, we've made traditional hanging dog ID tags, embroidered collars, rivet-on name plate collars, engraved buckle collars, slide-on name plates and eventually our ScruffTag Collars. Each solves the dog identification problem a little differently, and years of making them — and listening to the people and dogs using them — have taught us quite a bit about the advantages and tradeoffs of each.
The best dog identification isn't necessarily the same for every dog. What matters most is that your dog's ID is readable, durable, secure and there when it's needed.

Comparing Dog ID Tags and Personalized Dog Collars
There are many good ways to identify a dog. The comparison below summarizes the practical advantages and considerations of the most common dog identification options based on what we've learned making and using them.

Why We Put a Dog's Identification on the Scruff
Think about the name tag you wear at a convention.
You put it somewhere other people can easily see it — usually on your chest. You wouldn't hang it underneath your chin and expect everyone you meet to reach under there and look for your name.
Dogs have the same basic identification problem, just different anatomy.
For a dog, one of the most visible places for identification is right on the back of the neck — the scruff.
That simple observation became one of the ideas behind the dogIDs ScruffTag Collar.
How the ScruffTag Collar Evolved
The ScruffTag Collar evolved from the rivet-on name plate collars we were already making.
We wanted more surface area for larger, bolder identification. We wanted the name plate to become a structural part of the collar rather than another component attached to it. Most importantly, we wanted the identification to stay where another person could easily find it and in most cases read it by standing over or beside the dog without any contact.
There's some simple physics helping us out.
The buckle is generally the heaviest part of a dog collar, so gravity naturally pulls it toward the underside of the dog's neck. The ScruffTag/Slide-On Name Plate sits opposite the buckle in a ScruffTag Collar, helping keep the dog's identification where we want it — right on the scruff.
Unlike conventional slide-on name plates that can move around the collar strap, the ScruffTag name plate is built into the structure of a ScruffTag Collar. There aren't separate rivets holding the name plate onto the strap.
We think of it less as a collar with an ID tag attached and more as an all-in-one dog identification collar.

1. ScruffTag Collars: Bold Identification Right on the Scruff
For dog owners who want identification that's bold, easy to find and integrated directly into the collar, a ScruffTag Collar is our favorite solution.
The large engraved ScruffTag name plate provides room for highly readable identification while its position on the scruff makes that information easier for another person to locate and read easily.
There's nothing dangling below the dog's neck and no separate ID tag attachment ring to keep track of. The identification is part of the collar itself and positioned in the most practical and visible position at all times.

2. Rivet-On Name Plate Collars: Durable and Silent Identification
Rivet-on name plate collars remain one of our favorite identification systems and were an important step in the evolution of the ScruffTag Collar. And let's face it, they have a very traditional regal look to them when on a dog's neck. If you see a professional working dog on the job, this is most likely what they will be wearing. We've been making our NamePlate Collars for decades and they never seem to lose their appeal.
A durable engraved name plate is permanently riveted directly to the collar strap, creating silent identification without a traditional hanging tag. Our Rivet-On Dog Collar Name Plates are available in durable solid brass or stainless steel options and provide plenty of room for bold contact information.
They provide excellent readability and durability, and will never get caught on obstacles or make noise.
The primary difference from a ScruffTag Collar is the way the name plate is built into and positioned on the collar. The placement of a rivet-on name plate depends on the collar's design and where the strap provides a continuous flat area suitable for securely riveting the plate.
For many dogs and owners, that's an extremely practical and durable identification solution. The other bonus people like about rivet-on nameplates is they can be removed and replaced without disassembling the collar. Yes, takes a little extra mechanical work to do but it's really not that difficult with the right tools.
3. Embroidered Personalized Dog Collars: Lightweight, Bold and Silent
Embroidered personalized dog collars deserve a place near the top of the list because they're lightweight, bold, colorful and completely silent.
Your dog's name and phone number are embroidered on the collar strap, so there is no separate identification plate or hanging tag. On some the embroidery is directly on the nylon webbing of the collar and others, the embroidery is done on a grosgrain ribbon then sewn onto the nylon webbing for a little bit of contrast and extra flair.
They're particularly appealing when you want highly visible personalization without adding metal identification hardware. Sometimes the collar adjuster strap can cover part of the embroidery but it usually doesn't prevent the text from being readable.
The tradeoff is durability and readability. Embroidery and webbing naturally experience wear, and embroidered characters generally can't provide quite the same concentrated, crisp readability as a large engraved metal name plate. After some wear the embroidery can get a little fuzzy at times but that can usually be easily fixed by just burning off the "fuzzies" with a lighter giving the embroidery a little "haircut".
But for a lightweight, simple identification collar, embroidery remains an excellent choice.
What About Traditional Hanging Dog ID Tags?
We make and sell a lot of hanging dog ID tags — and for good reason.
They're one of the simplest and most recognizable forms of dog identification ever created.
A hanging tag can be added to almost any collar, moved when you change collars, replaced easily when information changes and made from many different materials, shapes and styles. A high-quality stainless steel dog ID tag can also be extremely durable.
There are tradeoffs.
Hanging tags can jingle, particularly when several tags are worn together or when it's meal time and your dog has a metal or glass dog dish. They're normally positioned underneath the dog's neck, so like engraved buckles, someone may need to reach underneath the dog's jowls to find and read them. The tag also depends on a separate split ring, S-hook or attachment device connecting it to the collar.
For plenty of dogs, none of those things are deal breakers. And let's be real here, hanging dog tags are fun and act as charms or decorative accents to your dog's attire.
The best dog ID is the identification your dog consistently wears and that another person can use to get them safely home.
If that's a traditional hanging tag for your dog, it's doing its job.
Slide-On Name Plates: Silent Identification for an Existing Flat Strap Collar
A ScruffTag/Slide-On Dog Collar Name Plate offers another smart way to eliminate the noise and movement of a traditional hanging tag without necessarily replacing the collar your dog already wears.
Instead of dangling from a ring, the collar strap passes through the name plate so the identification lies directly against the collar. A well-made slide-on name plate can be durable, quiet and easy to read. Make sure you have a "belt style" collar though with an open end (billet end) to slide through the name plate slots. Two piece quick/side release buckles won't work as both halves of the buckle on each end of the collar are too wide to fit through the slots.
If you do have a quick release buckle collar but still want a slide-on name plate for your dog's collar, an open end ScruffTag slide-on name plate is just the ticket. You just have to fold and tuck the collar strap through the open ends and no need to worry which buckle style will work or not.
This is also where it's helpful to distinguish the ScruffTag name plate from a ScruffTag Collar.
A ScruffTag/Slide-On Name Plate is the personalized identification component itself and can be used with compatible collar designs. A ScruffTag Collar is a complete dog collar specifically designed so the personalized ScruffTag name plate is actually part of the collar structure and positioned on the dog's scruff.
Depending on the design and fit, a conventional slide-on name plate added to an existing collar can move around the collar strap as the collar rotates. That isn't necessarily a problem, but it was one of the things we wanted to address when developing the complete ScruffTag Collar system.
We wanted the identification intentionally positioned on the dog's scruff rather than simply somewhere on the collar.
What We Learned From Engraved Buckle Collars
Engraved buckle collars are an elegant idea: put the dog's identification directly on the collar buckle and eliminate the need for a separate tag or other hardware. A minimalistic design.
We've spent quite a bit of time with this concept.
dogIDs began making engraved buckle collars back in 2012. Through our experience and customer feedback, we learned about some tradeoffs that aren't obvious when looking at the collar on a product page. We've found they really look sexy online with a white background to first-time dog collar shoppers. After a while though, many come back for something else once they have a better idea of what works best for them and has more focus on safety.
Identification Under the Dog's Jowls
The first consideration is location.
The buckle is generally the heaviest part of the collar, which means it naturally settles underneath the dog's neck. That's useful for helping position a ScruffTag name plate on the opposite side of a ScruffTag Collar, but it means engraved buckle identification normally sits beneath the dog's jowls.
Someone finding your dog has to know the engraving is there and may have to reach underneath an unfamiliar dog's chin to read it, which can deter them from helping your dog home.
Aluminum Versus Stainless Steel Durability
Material matters too. Engraved metal buckles are commonly made from aluminum. In our experience, aluminum tends to show wear considerably faster than stainless steel, particularly when the buckle continually rubs against surfaces underneath the dog's neck.
Why We Moved Away From All-Metal Buckles
Our experience with all-metal buckle designs also taught us something important about the buckle itself.
We received customer feedback about metal buckles rattling because of play between the two metal halves. More importantly, we received reports of buckles unintentionally unlatching.
A buckle doesn't usually get tested hardest at a convenient time. A dog may put maximum strain on a collar when something has caught their attention and they're pulling hard to chase it — precisely when an unintended release can become dangerous.
We didn't want to accept that as simply the nature of the hardware.
We worked with our supplier on a hybrid buckle design using an aluminum female half with a plastic male half. The two materials engage much more tightly, reducing the loose metal-to-metal movement that causes jingling while creating a more secure latch.
That experience is one of many examples of how the products we make today have evolved from years of customer feedback and real-world use.
What Information Should You Put on a Personalized Dog Collar or ID Tag?
The purpose of dog identification is to give someone who finds your dog enough clear information to contact you quickly.
For most dogs, that means prioritizing:
- Your dog's name, or no dog name...It's a personal preference. We recommend your dog's name so whoever happens to find them has a way to soothe them with their familiar name sound. We feel that outweighs the odds of someone using your dog's name to more easily steal them. Again, it's personal preference. No right or wrong answer so let's not debate it. To each their own.
- One or more phone numbers. Imperative. The more phone numbers, the better!
- Additional contact or important medical information when space allows. Medical alert messages are also great deterrents to dog thieves!
The larger lesson we've learned is simple: don't sacrifice readability just to squeeze more information onto the ID.
A phone number someone can quickly read and call is way more useful than a crowded block of tiny information. Concise bold contact info call you quickly. A finder won't want to dig out their reading glasses to read a short "bio" on your dog's ID tag.
Which Dog Identification Is Right for Your Dog?
Start with the dog in front of you.
If you want large, highly visible identification intentionally positioned on the scruff, consider a ScruffTag Collar.
If you want durable, silent identification permanently attached to a traditional collar, a Rivet-On Name Plate Collar may be the right fit.
If you value lightweight, bold and colorful identification, an Embroidered Personalized Dog Collar is an excellent option.
