Why We Ditched Seed Oils: The Story Behind Our New Dog Treats

We all know that feeling. You’re standing in the pet aisle, holding a bag of dog treats, squinting at the ingredient label on the back wondering, “Why? Does my dog really need to consume that?”.

You recognize the first ingredient, maybe the second. But then the list descends into multi-syllable chemical names, artificial preservatives, and vague terms like "animal by-product". Wait. Why?

At dogIDs, we believe our dogs are family. And if we are increasingly conscious about the quality of food we put on our own plates—seeking out whole foods and avoiding hyper-processed ingredients—why should we lower our standards for our best friends?

That question was the starting point for our newest creation. We wanted to develop a treat that wasn't just "safe," but genuinely nutritious. A reward that your dog will go crazy for, without making you feel guilty.

The Catalyst for Change

Years ago our family dog, Hunter, a black labrador retriever, developed severe allergies. He lost hair creating bald spots, his jowls and feet would swell up and he had constant hot spots causing him to itch. A few times his whole head even swelled up, which was alarming as we’ve never seen that happen to a dog before from allergies. We felt so sorry for him. The only thing that had been determined at this point was that he was allergic to both food and airborne allergens.

We went through the gamut - allergy tests, allergy shots, special food diets…I don’t even want to know how much money and time we spent on vet and university visits trying to figure things out.

After all of this for several years we finally took him to a holistic vet. After his first session, we were instructed to start feeding him much differently. Up until then, we were feeding him the “best” kibble we thought we could. The brands we tried had the prettiest packaging, incredible marketing and big claims of being the healthiest food we could buy for him with all kinds of “veterinarian approved” endorsements. This was in the late 90’s and almost all dog food at that time was industrial baked kibble, pumped full of fillers and preservatives along with long lists of weird ingredients we had no clue about.

We finally switched to home made food with the best ingredients we could find. We weren’t gardening back then though and organic food at grocery stores was pretty unheard of. Long story short, we reduced his symptoms greatly following a diet recommended by the holistic vet best we could. He also had allergies from airborne allergens though so it was a lifelong endeavor trying to help him be more comfortable. Food and treats was the one thing we could try to control but it was a challenge.

My wife and I learned A LOT about food in general (for humans and pets) going through this process with Hunter, and how the dog food market had become very off track with overbaked, over filler-supplemented dog foods that were formulated purely for profit, not pet health, no matter what the marketers claimed.

That lesson hit home and stuck with me. And so the quest began to find dog foods and treats that weren’t just pretty and flavorful for our dogs, but healthy for them as well.

The Elephant in the Room: Why No Seed Oils?

With our new treats that we just launched on dogIDs.com, you might notice something missing from our ingredient list—something that is present in a shocking number of commercial dog treats: industrial seed oils.

We made a conscious decision to formulate our treats completely Seed Oil-Free.

So, why did we ditch oils like canola, soybean, corn, and sunflower oil? In short, these oils are often highly processed, refined using high heat and harsh chemicals. In modern diets (both human and canine), these oils are ubiquitous and can contribute to inflammation in the body.

We knew we could do better.

Instead of cheap fillers, we chose Olive Oil. It’s a premium, heart-healthy fat source that is excellent for supporting your dog’s skin and coat health. It costs more to produce treats this way, but the difference in quality is undeniable.

If We Wouldn’t Eat It, They Don’t Get It

When we say these treats are 100% Human-Grade, we mean it. No unicorn and rainbow filled marketing stories here.

Every ingredient in each bag is sourced from the human food supply chain. There are no "feed-grade" mystery ingredients and they're made right here in the USA in an SQF-Certified facility, ensuring the highest standards of food safety.
