Not all custom collars are created equal. Whether your dog is a lake-loving Lab, a high-energy Border Collie or a city-slicking Frenchie, the right choice depends on their lifestyle. Use this guide to find your perfect match.
1. Choose Your Activity Level (Material Guide)
For the Rough & Tumble Swimmer & Mud Lover (Best: Waterproof Soft Grip): If your dog loves water and just getting out in the brush, skip the nylon and leather. Our Waterproof Soft Grip collars (made from high-tech Biothane) are odor-proof, tough as nails, easy to wipe clean, and will never get soggy and musty. They look like leather but perform like armor against the elements. And though they are super tough, they're soft to the touch and comfortable for your canine companion. Hard to describe in words and imagery. But once you have one in your hand...Ah, now I understand. You'll see.
For the Comfort Seeker (Best: Nylon): Soft, lightweight, and available in virtually every color. Nylon is perfect for everyday wear and sleeping. It’s our most popular choice for puppies and sensitive necks. If lightweight is your top priority, nylon is definitely the way to go. Nylon webbing is very strong yet light and soft. There's a reason so many opt for nylon and just replace them once odors can't be washed out any longer.
For the Classy Canine (Best: English Bridle Leather): Nothing beats the look of genuine English Bridle Leather. Ideally suited for dry environments and city walks, these collars break in beautifully over time. It's somewhat stiff at first but as they absorb the natural oils from your dog's coat they gain character and become nice and soft. There's just something very regal about a dog with a high quality leather collar around its neck.
For the Night Owls and Early Birds (Best: Reflective Biothane or Nylon): If early morning or evening walks are part of you and your canine companion's daily routine, a collar that reflects light is a must for safety, especially if there is traffic during your "sniffaries". We use a special variation of Biothane for our waterproof reflective collars where the reflective strip is sonically welded to the strap in a fixed groove so it doesn't ever stick up or peel off. There are other variations of reflective Biothane that aren't as soft and sleek like the strap we use. Be particular when looking around and you'll notice the difference.
2. Select Your Personalization Style
The "ScruffTag" (Exclusive to dogIDs): The nameplate is built into the collar strap, sitting right on the back of your dog's neck. It is totally silent and always readable without you having to reach under a strange dog's mouth. The surface area is also large allowing plenty of space for your personalization to be as large as possible. We always try to maximize the space when engraving your custom text to make sure it looks nice, but more importantly is as readable as possible.

Embroidery: We stitch your dog’s name and number directly into the nylon webbing. They're high contrast and easy to read from a distance. We always recommend high contrast webbing and embroidery thread color combinations for highest visibility and easy reading.
Laser Engraved Nameplate: A traditional brass or stainless steel name plate riveted to the collar. Deep laser engraving ensures the text never wears off and since it's riveted to the collar strap, it's low profile and won't catch on anything. They're also silent and many prefer this classic style as it's a very familiar look that has stuck around over many decades...Proven ID solution that many still love.
Engraved Buckle: For the minimalist. Your info is engraved directly onto the metal buckle for a clean, modern look. No other parts or separate ID necessary. However, the space to engrave is small and hangs under your dog's chin. If this isn't a big concern to you, simpler is better in your opinion and you don't have a lot of engraved text needed, this may be your perfect solution.
3. Sizing: The "Two-Finger" Rule
To get the perfect fit, measure your dog's neck with a sewing tape or string and add enough space to slide two fingers comfortably between the measuring tape and the neck. If your dog is between sizes, always size up or choose a collar with plenty of adjustment holes. We use a "true sizing" system at dogIDs and always have. The measurement you take is the size you need. We don't know whoever started sizing collars with total collar length but we don't do that here. If you were buying a new pair of pants for yourself, would you measure the total length of the wasteband unbuttoned to find your size or measure your waste? Right. Our thoughts exactly.

Our ScruffTags and riveted NamePlates are completely silent and we like them that way. To each their own though. Some people like the sound of hanging ID tags and it helps them know where their furry friend is at all times. Dog ID tags are also a fun accessory. Kind of like jewelry for our pups.

Frequently Asked Questions About Personalized Dog Collars
Will the personalization fade or rub off over time?
Not on our watch. For our embroidered collars, the name is stitched directly into the webbing or onto a decorative ribbon then lockstitch sewn onto the webbing. For our laser-engraved nameplates, we use deep laser etching. Both our laser engraving and embroidery are guaranteed for the life of the pet. If it ever becomes illegible without extraordinary abuse, we will replace it for free.
How do I clean a personalized collar if it gets muddy?
Waterproof Soft Grip: Simply wipe it down with a damp cloth or rinse it in the sink. Nylon: Machine wash on a gentle cycle (use a garment bag to protect the hardware) and air dry. Leather: Wipe with a damp cloth and treat with leather cleaner and conditioner to prevent cracking.
My dog is between sizes. Which size should I choose?
We always recommend sizing up. Our collars are adjustable, so a larger size gives you more room to tighten it for a perfect fit. For growing puppies, check out our specific Puppy Collars which offer extra adjustability. Consider the season too. Does your dog lose and gain weight at different times of the year? If so, plan accordingly.
How long does it take to ship?
Because we manufacture right here in the USA, we're fast. Most personalized orders ship within 1-3 business days. Each product is truly made to order though, from cutting strap to each stitch sewn. We don't begin making your dog's custom product until your order comes in. No, we don't just grab a collar off the rack, package it up and ship it. Hence, during high demand times like the holidays or big sales events, we can get a little backed up at times. Our team is small yet mighty, but we are human and make all of our products by hand. There's only so much time in the days and we need to sleep too. No robots, magic elves that come in at night or fancy automated collar making machines in our shop. Just dog lovers making collars with our hands for other dog lovers, to help keep their best friends stay Known and Safely Home. We consider that a strength, not a weakness. But during heavy order spikes, yes, orders can take a little longer. Not very often but at times.
